Narrative

Sub-competency 1:
Identifies and participates in communities of practice within the field of Learning Design and Technology

Professionally, I have a been a member of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) for as long as I have been in Talent and Development. It is a vibrant community of learning professionals with many opportunities to learn, connect, and grow your career. I participate in local ATD Nashville chapter events when my schedule allows and I have participated as a member of the e-learning special interest group (SIG) in the Nashville ATD chapter. Now that my degree program is coming to a close, I look forward to reconnecting with my colleagues each month to help support our e-learning and talent development community here in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

I also enjoy attending learning and development conferences where I gain new perspectives and insights into the industry and learn about new products and services. I am a member of the E-Learning Guild which promotes learning development conferences such as DevLearn. In 2017, I attended the Learning Technologies conference in London which was an amazing opportunity to connect with Instructional Designers in Europe and Great Britain. I plan to attend the ATD International Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C. in May of 2019.

Lastly, one of my favorite communities of practice is the Articulate E-learning Heroes. I have learned so much from this community. It is truly my first recommendation for training in e-learning design and development. I plan to participate in the weekly design challenges to continue developing my eLearning expertise and build out my design portfolio to complement my competency portfolio.

Competency Reflection

In thinking back on the learning development experiences I have participated in over the past few years, I am left with a feeling of pride and connectedness to a great association of talented individuals who so freely share their ideas to help others grow and succeed. It is a privilege to be a part of these professional organizations and communities of practice.
